The Sulphur Well Academy is an online ministry associated with ABLE Farms, a missional farm community in northwest Tennessee where persons of all abilities and backgrounds experience belonging, love, and equality. The Sulphur Well Academy name is a historical reference to a two-room school house – the Sulphur Well Academy – that once existed on the farm. The ruins – three sets of concrete steps – of the schoolhouse sit on the farm next to the road which is appropriately named Sulphur Well Academy Road.
Historically the community is referred to as Sulphur Well due to the presence of an artesian well with mineral water that served as a bonafide tourist attraction with a theater, ball fields, and other attractions around the well that was seen to have medicinal value. The original artesian well now rests under Kentucky Lake after TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) built a dam that covered much of the area with water. Many of the locals still talk about wells in the area having primarily sulfur water. Today, there are only two official remaining structures that retain the name Sulphur Well – the Sulphur Well Academy Road and the Sulphur Well Church of Christ which has been meeting for over a century. ABLE Farms is located a half mile from the Sulphur Well Church where the steps to the original academy sit.
ABLE Farms is a 501c3 non-profit ministry that is not tied to any church, denomination, or religious institution. The Sulphur Well Academy is a ministry of ABLE Farms with hopes of facilitating kingdom conversations on the farm. We believe the farm is one of the best classrooms available to learn valuable life lessons and make connections with God, one another, and creation. The Sulphur Well Academy will serve as a place to share ideas, biblical and theological reflections, and insights in order to facilitate kingdom conversations.
